Senior Health Coverage in Nevada (NV)

The initial enrollment period (IEP) for Medicare is between 3 months before and after reaching the age of 65; late enrollment will result in penalties. In some cases, disability cases are allowed to enroll before this period, specifically from the 22nd to the 28th month of disability.

Part A of Medicare covers hospitalization and is a benefit provided by the federal government, automatically to qualified seniors, with no premium required. Part B is optional medical insurance, and availing involves a monthly payment that is deducted from Social Security benefits. Part C is insurance coverage for prescription drugs, and was added as an option to Medicare in January 1, 2006 as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Modernization and Improvement Act (MMA) passed by Congress in 2003. Medicare Advantage plans fall under the provisions of Plan C, although not all Medicare Advantage plans actually cover prescription drugs. Enrollment for first-time Medicare Advantage plan enrollees is from January 1 to March 31 of each year. Switching Medicare Advantage plans can only be done from November 15 to December 31 and will remain in effect for the whole of the following year. Switching automatically cancels enrollment in the old Medicare Advantage plan.
