Medicare Part C - Medicare Advantage
Medicare Part A and Part B together make up the Original Medicare Plan, while Medicare Part C is now commonly known as Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage plans are health plans offered by private companies that receive subsidies from the federal government to provide coverage for their members. Medicare Part C covers everything covered by the Original Medicare Plan, plus additional benefits such as hearing, vision, or prescription drug benefits. When you buy a Medicare Advantage Plan, you receive all of your Medicare benefits through that plan. While Medicare Advantage must cover everything the Original Medicare Plan covers, it does not need to cover those things for the same amount. This allows you to choose a plan with the most coverage for the services you need.

There are different types of Medicare Advantage plans that offer different ways of paying for and receiving your healthcare services.
- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans keep down your healthcare costs by coordinating your care through a local network of doctors and hospitals. You generally must receive your coverage through a network provider to receive coverage for services.
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans work with a network or preferred physicians and hospitals. You pay less by visiting a preferred provider, but can usually visit a doctor or hospital outside your network by paying a higher cost.
- Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans work without a plan network, allowing you to visit any doctor or hospital that will accept your plan's terms and conditions of payment.
- Medical Savings Account (MSA) plans deposit money in a special savings account that you use to pay for qualified medical expenses that you choose. Your plan has a high deductible and if you use up the money in your savings account you pay for all of your medical expenses until your deductible is met. Once you meet your deductible, your plan will cover your qualified medical expenses. If you do not use up all the money in your savings account, it will carry over to the following year.
- Special Needs Plans (SNP) are designed for people with certain chronic illnesses or for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.
