Types of Health Screenings for Seniors
- Fall Risk Assessment: The screener will ask you a series of questions and test you on your balance.
- Blood Pressure Check: This is a routine check done at your physician’s office with a blood pressure cuff.
- Glucose Screening for Diabetes: The screener will prick your finger to find out if your blood sugar level falls in a healthy range.
- Vision and Glaucoma Screening: The screener will test your eyesight and check for signs of glaucoma.
- Hearing Screening: Screener will test your hearing using tones through earphones.
- Cholesterol Screening: A simple blood test retrieves cholesterol levels.
- Dental Screening: Check teeth for decay and other problems.
- Skin Cancer Detection: Test any moles or other marks on the skin for cancer.
- Blood Test: Testing kidney function and other organs to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Urinalysis: Screener will ask for urine to test for any abnormalities.
- Colorectal Risk: Screener will ask you a series of questions to see if you are at risk for colon cancer. If you are, you will need to receive further testing.
Where to Receive a Health Screening
You can usually receive many of these tests from your physician. However, some health insurances will not cover routine testing. If you cannot afford to pay for the screening, many communities hold annual health fairs, which provide free or low cost screening for seniors. Contact your health department or social services office to find out if you have one in your area.
