Georgia Senior Health Insurance Overview (GA)

Only 12% of the total population of Georgia is enrolled in Medicare (ranked as the fifth lowest percentage). This is especially surprising considering the relatively older population of Georgia and the large amount of seniors living at or near the federal poverty level. As a state, Georgia is ranked 47th in Medicare enrollment.

If you are a resident in the state of Georgia, are over 65 years old and/or are disabled, you already qualify for Medicare coverage. Georgia offers two types of Medicare plans, Part A and Part B. You will also find well-known insurance agencies here, like the Blue Cross Blue Shield, which offers Medicare Part A plans to Georgian citizens. To help determine which options you should choose, you should discuss your needs with a Medicare representative. With the Medicare Part A option, you will receive coverage for a lot of the health care costs that are billed to you from hospital admissions (this plan is sometimes referred to as Hospital Insurance).

Some of the enrollees of the Part A plan will be required to make co-payments and/or pay deductibles. If you decide to go with a Georgia supplementary policy, you won't have to make any form of payments towards the plan. With the Part B option, you will receive basic coverage for doctor visits and services (often referred to as Medical Insurance). The premium you have to pay for this option is determined by your income. You do have the option of also enrolling in the Part D* plan, which is used to give benefits for prescription drugs.
