Florida Senior Health Insurance (FL)

Florida is one of the top places for the elderly to retire, giving it a high percentage of Medicare beneficiaries in the country. There are over three million residents of Florida who are enrolled in a Medicare program. Florida has the most seniors per-capita than any other state in the union. About 17% of the population is over the age of 65, and the ideal climate, high-quality medical facilities and senior-friendly services make the state a popular destination for retirees, especially the Ft. Lauderdale/ West Palm Beach area.

The Medicare Part D* option was recently added in 2004, which is used to help enrollees of the plan get coverage for medications; this is especially helpful for the individuals who have a chronic illness. The Part D option doesn't come with the original Medicare plan and must be added on by the enrollee.

A lot of the prescription drug plans around the states have one flaw, the "Doughnut Hole," which is a coverage gap in the Medicare Part D plan. There are also maximums on the coverage given for prescription drugs, so if there is a medication needed that exceeds it, you could be left paying up to the full price of the drug. Those that get subsidies because of their low income are an exception. About 25% of the enrollees of this plan are affected by the Doughnut Hole.
