Alaska Health Plans for Seniors (AK)

There are several health insurance plans available for the elderly residents of Alaska. If you are over the age of 65, as of 2008, you have the option of choosing between four different insurance plans. There is also the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan*, which is available to you through insurance agencies and private groups that have already been approved by Medicare. This coverage is added to the plan you decide to go with. The four plans you can choose from include the original Medicare plan (Part A), Part B, Part D and a Medicare Medical Savings Account. The Part A plan is automatically rewarded to you upon acceptance from the policy.

With the Part B plan, you are given coverage for in-home care, wheelchairs and other medical supplies. For assistance with buying prescription drugs, the Part D plan is to help defray the high costs of prescription drugs. There is a list of drugs that are on the Medicare Part D plan, so make sure to check that to ensure the medications you need are covered. Then there is the Medicare Medical Savings Account option, which allows you to have more control over your medical expenses. There are also a couple of fee for service health insurance options, which means you only pay when you use medical services.
